Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has named an inexperienced Manchester United team which will break records for this afternoon’s game with Astana.
United have already qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa League as they seek to return to the Champions League for next year; and Solskjaer has used the opportunity to both give his injury-ravaged squad a breather and give some rookies an opportunity.
That will mean a record number of academy products will likely feature for the club in Eastern Europe, though the manager has also taken the opportunity to state ahead of time that he will be giving starts to Lee Grant, the experienced keeper who signed last year and has yet to start a game, and Jesse Lingard, who will captain the side. Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Luke Shaw are also likely to feature as they continue their return from injury.
9 home grown players start – which is not quite the club record for academy appearances – but with the substitutions, a record is likely to be broken in terms of overall competitors in a single game.
